Hi there—great question!
A slip fitter won’t mount directly onto a 4" square pole. Slip fitters are designed to go over a 2-3/8" (2.375") OD round tenon. For a 4" square pole, you’ll want this adapter, which converts the pole top to a 2-3/8" round tenon:

Install the adapter on the pole, then slide the slip fitter over the new tenon and tighten the set bolts.
